What is Medifund?

Medifund is a financial assistance scheme to help needy Singaporean patients pay for their medical care.

Who qualifies to apply for Medifund assistance?

If you are a Singaporean (permanent residents do not qualify) and a 5-8 bedded or subsidised patient of a government restructured hospital and cannot afford to pay the medical charges, you can apply for Medifund assistance through our Medical Social Service Department. Please inform the nurse-in-charge who will then refer you to the Medical Social Worker.

How do I apply for Medifund?

The Medical Social Worker will interview you and thereafter assist you to apply for Medifund assistance. You have to complete an application form, which is obtainable from the hospital.

How much help can I get from Medifund?

Medifund assistance is for Singaporean patients who are facing financial hardship. It is not an entitlement. Patients have to fulfil certain income criteria before their applications can be approved. The amount of help from Medifund will depend on individual circumstances and the patient's financial background. The Hospital Medifund Committee will consider the application.

Medifund is also a funding of last resort. This means that the applicant must exhaust all other funds (e.g. Medisave) first before the balance is being considered for Medifund.

How much help can a 8-bedded patient get?

6-bedded patient will be helped up to only 60% of the bill. This is to ensure that the amount of help given to a 6-bedded patient is equivalent to that of a 8-bedded patient for the same medical treatment.

What cases will Medifund not help?

Medifund will not give any support for respite care.
