Bringing Back Her Smile
Mdm Choy Sai Mui suffered a fall at home while making her way to the wash basin in the kitchen and fractured her right hip in July 2009. At 83 years old, it was her third fall in 11 years.
Though her first two falls had left her more fragile than before, Mdm Choy was still capable of taking care of her own daily living activities. After her most recent operation at the National University Hospital, Mdm Choy could not move her leg at all. This left her dependent on others to take care of her for even the most basic needs. The once independent woman, had difficulties coping with her situation.
When Mdm Choy was admitted to Ang Mo Kio – Thye Hua Kwan Hospital (AMK-THKH) for rehabilitation in August 2009, the team of doctors, nurses, therapists and medical social workers worked together to bring her back on her feet.
Mdm Choy made slow progress initially but with the encouragement and support given, she grew more confident in completing her exercises and achieved steady improvement.
When she first got warded with the Hospital, she was so weak that she needed assistance to turn on the bed but today, Mdm Choy walks independently with the aid of a walking frame.
Her daughter, Patricia Cheong, 59, acknowledges the care given by the team at AMK-THKH. “My mother’s stay here was comfortable and encouraging. The Hospital’s staff took good care of her and the improvement is proof of their care and hard work.”

"In terms of concern, spirit and
compassion, based on the people
I have come in contact with, your
hospital is in a class by itself.
Mdm. Tham Keok Siew, 59
"It is obvious that every member
of your staff is highly skilled,
taught to take pride in their work
and shares the same priority -
total patient care."
Mr. Tan Bock Kok, 69
"If a person had to be in a
rehabilitation hospital, I can’t think
of a better one than AMK–THKH.
The experience stays with you. I
strongly recommend it."
Mdm. Tan Leh Siung, 49
"I came into the hospital a very
nervous hip replacement patient.
I left confident and relaxed,
comfortable with my ability to care
for myself and my family. You
cared for me intensely when I
needed care, and let me care for
myself when I was ready. What
more could a rehabilitation patient
ask for?...I cannot remember the
names of the doctors, nurses and
therapists, but I know they were
there for me.
Mr. K Selvam, 72
"The care that my father received
was outstanding. The encourage-
ment that he was given daily was
above and beyond anything that I
expected. We owe a large amount of his speedy recovery to the support and care that we got from your therapy team.
Mr. Lee Ngok Soon, 38
