The Spirit of Volunteerism
A friendly wave from the patients greet Mr Hoon Thye Hong as he starts making his rounds around Ang Mo Kio –
Thye Hua Kwan Hospital’s wards...
As a volunteer with the hospital, Mr Hoon
walks around the wards with the Delight Cart
every Monday. He and other volunteers sell
biscuits, sweets, cakes and other light snacks
to patients and their families.
Every dollar collected goes towards the
Patient Welfare Fund.
Mr Hoon has been a volunteer at Ang Mo Kio – Thye Hua Kwan Hospital for the past six years.
The 80 year old ‘young’ man, leads a busy life.
From his gym workouts to sitting on volunteer
committee boards to volunteer work at
Ang Mo Kio – Thye Hua Kwan Hospital and
Ang Mo Kio Primary School among others.
Mr Hoon reveals the secret to his boundless energy. “My motivation for life is to live each day to the fullest.
And volunteer work helps me live up to this,” he says. Continues Mr Hoon, “Volunteerism is in my blood. I want to
help people. It gives me a reason to wake up each morning.”
This senior gentleman is certainly a role model for all volunteers! |

Make a difference. Give back to
your community. Embrace the
spirit of volunteerism.

"I have found my career with
Ang Mo Kio – Thye Hua Kwan
Hospital to be rewarding largely
due to the variety of opportunities I have enjoyed.
As part of a forward-moving
organisation, I have grown and
developed professional and
interpersonal skills which have
made me a more all-rounded
team player."
